Flock License Plate Reader Program Under Review
The city's eight Flock cameras divided residents: supporters cite faster police response and a recent incident that helped save a person in crisis, while opponents call them unconstitutional mass surveillance. The council directed staff to remove the cameras now and not budget for them next year.
Fire Services Consolidation
Oviedo runs two stations at about $5.45 million each — cheaper per station than the county's roughly $5.5–6 million. Some council members want to explore handing fire to the county to relieve the city's 10-mill cap; others say the cost just gets shifted, not saved.
Fire Department Consolidation
Council's June 29 stance ruled out consolidating police or fire with the county, which narrows the city's options if Amendment 3 passes. A fire fee (non-ad valorem assessment) and a possible fire-fee rate study were discussed, including how the county fire district overlaps the city.
Police department annex funding
The city is designing a new 15,148-square-foot, two-story police annex plus a renovation of the existing police building, with IT moving in from City Hall. The $18.2 million estimate leaves a $1.2 million funding gap that could close through value engineering or the fourth-generation sales tax.
