Rejected Investigation Into City Manager
Key West commissioners voted 5-2 to scrap a $75,000 independent probe into City Manager Brian Barroso’s conduct. Some commissioners said the price and rationale didn’t add up, so the accountability question at the top of city hall goes unanswered—for now.
Public Works Appointment
Monroe County has named Anderson as its public works division director, putting him in charge of roads, infrastructure, and maintenance. That means he’ll have a hand in shaping which local projects move forward and how county infrastructure needs get handled.
Swearing-in Ceremony
Key West’s new District 4 commissioner is being sworn in Nov. 9 at City Hall. It’s a ceremonial step, but it shifts the balance on the dais, so neighborhood decisions could change.
Cudjoe Key home setback variance
Michele Putko filed a motion asking the commission to reconsider its earlier approval of a 22-foot front setback variance for a detached dwelling in Cutthroat Harbor Estates. The outcome could reopen a neighbor dispute over development near her property.
REEF sculpture setback variances in Key Largo
REEF plans an iconic 15-foot sculpture with a seating area at the gateway to the Florida Keys on Overseas Highway, replacing a long-standing billboard, after winning front setback variances.
Key deer habitat protections codified for Big Pine and No Name Keys
The 20-year-old habitat plan for key deer, indigo snakes and marsh rabbits expires June 30, and federal law requires moving reviews to the county's permit referral process on July 1. Conservation advocates urged a one-year extension, citing lost monitoring and enforceability questions.
Species assessment guides and Habitat Conservation Plan update
The Habitat Conservation Plan and Incidental Take Permit for Big Pine and No Name Keys expire June 30, 2026. The board was to accept a US Fish and Wildlife Service letter transitioning reviews of three protected species into the county's permit referral process under the 2010 Biological Opinion starting July 1, 2026.
Alcohol sales at the new Tavernier Publix
The new Publix under construction at mile marker 92.5 can sell beer and wine in the grocery store and beer, wine and liquor at a package store, once the store gets its certificate of occupancy.
Alcohol permit at Key Largo marina
Publix wants permits to sell beer and wine in its grocery store and full package liquor sales in an attached store at Mile Marker 92.5 in Tavernier. This would change what's available to shoppers at that location.
Emergency Management Tour
Monroe County's mayor and emergency leaders toured Flamingo, a remote Everglades spot that's tough to reach but important when disasters hit. The point is simple: get officials' eyes on the ground so response plans aren't just theory.
City Attorney Selection
Key West’s search for a new city attorney is just getting organized: the committee picked its leaders, but only one person has applied so far. That means the hire could drag on, leaving City Hall without a permanent top lawyer for a while.
US-1 traffic study and LOS methodology
Staff went project-by-project through all 47 priorities for easing U.S. 1 congestion, from a Keyswide bike-ped master plan grant expected in June to a pedestrian bridge from Stock Island to Key West being re-examined by FDOT. Two transit projects were shelved and the countywide traffic-flow analysis is getting cost estimates before the county commits money.
Fire Station Construction
Monroe County is tearing down and rebuilding Fire Station #10 on Sugarloaf Key as a bigger two-story facility. The payoff is better fire response for the Keys, but nearby residents and drivers should expect some construction disruption while work is underway.
Elections Investigation
Monroe County’s elections chief is looking into reports that armed, masked federal agents stopped people at a Key Largo polling/government site during early voting. The concern is voter intimidation—and whether it chilled access to the ballot. If true, it’s a big deal for trust in local elections.
Harry Harris Park paid parking
The county is close to finalizing an agreement for a parking management app and enforcement, starting with paid parking at Harry Harris Park — $5 for two hours, $2 an hour after — with exemptions for residents, military, and disabled permit holders. Expansion to other parks could follow if the pilot works.
NGM Insurance settlement — Cudjoe Key transfer station fire
The county settled its lawsuit over the fire that destroyed the Cudjoe Key transfer station for $1.8 million, recovering its replacement contractor costs and legal fees, though it gave up a hard-to-prove liquidated damages claim.
Big Pine Key government community campus
The county wants to build a consolidated government center on Big Pine Key — community center, tax collector, building department, and the District 2 commissioner's office — replacing leased space that costs $100,000-$150,000 a year. The plan hinges on buying about an acre of surplus state Forestry Division land next to the hurricane-damaged county site.
New fire SCBA equipment purchase
The Fire District board bought ~$994,000 in new Draeger self-contained breathing apparatus because 2024 state legislation made the old Scott packs non-compliant and they were already at end of life. The new packs last 10-14 years and can be serviced in-house.
City Commission Election
Sarah Compton, a Key West business owner and Planning Board member, is running for City Commission District IV and campaigning as if she’s the underdog. If you live in that district, this race matters because the winner will help decide local zoning and development fights.
Affordable housing ROGO allocations
Between July 13, 2026 and July 2027 the county cannot accept or revise ROGO applications while it rewrites its code for the state-mandated 657 new allocations. Building permits can still be processed and held.
Florida Amendment 3 property tax impact
The property appraiser's analysis found Amendment 3 likely won't shrink Monroe County's overall taxable value — non-homestead properties offset homestead savings — but the fire/ambulance district in the lower and middle Keys would lose revenue. Even so, the county's ~$12.5 million in annual cost growth outpaces the projected new revenue, and a state-mandated 10% budget-cut exercise is coming.
Town Hall Meeting
Key West’s mayor is hosting a town hall Oct. 28 at City Hall to hear residents out on affordable housing—one of the Keys’ biggest pain points. If you care about rents, workforce housing, or what the city should do next, this is your chance to speak up.
