9 issues in zoning with high priority
Minimum lot width and floodplain rules
The code allows 20-foot-wide lots even though homes must be 30 feet wide — a contradiction staff is fixing. Commissioners debated whether new lots should be 50 or 75 feet wide, weighing affordability and density against home values and neighborhood character. Decision deferred to a future per-land-use standards table.
Administrative plat approval process
A new state law requires that all preliminary and final subdivision plats be approved at the staff level instead of by the Planning Commission and City Commission. The amendment removes the commissions as land-use authorities for plats.
Nature Walk Subdivision land-use amendment
A failed golf course off Highway 390 could become a 116-home subdivision, and the whole neighborhood showed up to push back. Residents worry about traffic on already-congested 390, construction trucks through their streets, drainage into Mill Bayou and the Landings, kids' safety near the Meadows park, and losing the only affordable public golf course this side of the bridge. The commission tabled the decision to December 1 to research a similar 2015 proposal that was unanimously denied.
Resignation rules for boards and committees (Section 15)
Residents have been pushing for clearer rules on how officials resign, hoping to avoid a repeat of a past controversy. The ballot language is now approved and headed to the commission for the April ballot.
Citizens' Bill of Rights
A proposed citizens rights section (planned as new Section 33) was tabled until the full committee can be present.
Charter Section 15 — Resignations ballot language
After a commissioner resigned and tried to un-resign, the committee wants clear charter language: once you resign — verbally or in writing — it's done. Draft language exists but no vote was taken yet.
Charter amendment ballot referendum for November 2026
There are three open spaces on the November ballot for charter changes; a joint meeting with the Charter Review Committee is set for August 19 to pick which amendments go forward, including an updated vacancy protocol.
Small lot splits shouldn't require big studies
Commissioners flagged that requiring environmental impact reports and stormwater plans for a simple lot split is overkill and unaffordable for a homeowner. Staff agreed to simplify the lot split/minor subdivision provisions before bringing the ordinance back.
AI/data center moratorium
The city froze all data center and AI data center applications while it drafts an ordinance — the proper first step toward a possible one-year moratorium, mirroring neighboring counties.
