9 issues in taxes budget with medium priority
Affordable housing program oversight
Habitat reported 35 home repairs and 18 new homes last year, with ARPA infrastructure dollars enabling the Sager's Cove pocket neighborhood, and plans for 15 more Lake County homes this year.
Solid Waste Rate Increase
Hauling and disposal contract costs are pushing solid waste assessments up about $37 a year; a public hearing follows September 8.
Property Appraiser budget appeal
A year after rejecting the property appraiser's 27% budget increase, the board will consider appealing this year's budget by $1 million within the 15-day window, redirecting the money to roads if successful.
Proposed planning and zoning fee increases
The Home Builders Association is pushing back on the FY2027 fee schedules, saying the county hasn't shown how the new fees — including a $2,500 expedited business review fee — were calculated, and warning that higher fees feed into housing costs.
FEMA hurricane reimbursement delays
The county has spent $18 million on hurricanes since 2022 but gotten only about $4 million back, with $11.8 million still pending. Commissioners floated lobbying Washington and stepping up the call cadence.
Fire, solid waste and MSBU assessments
Solid waste rates rose $37 to cover hauling contracts; fire assessments held flat with a new tiered residential structure; the septic-to-DWTS fee rose 3% to $700.19; and subdivision road MSBUs continue with Trailside newly joining.
North Lake Hospital District continuation
By state law the hospital district's continuation must go to voters every ten years. The Board put it on the November 3 ballot, 4-1, with Commissioner Sabatini voting no and floating a legal challenge to test whether the vote is truly mandatory.
Possible Lake Express fare increase
Transit staff noted the county hasn't raised fixed-route fares since 2007 and that a 25-cent increase to $1.25 could bring in about $45,000 a year while still keeping Lake County among the lowest fares in the region. Staff offered to bring back a deeper analysis.
FY2025 audit and county finances
Clean audit across the board: net position up ~$100 million, revenues $17 million over projection, reserves above goal despite hurricane losses. Good news for the county's financial footing heading into budget season.
