Civic Issues
Topics getting the most attention in Lake County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they are discussed.
47 issues with medium priority
St. Gertrude Community CFD amendment rezoning withdrawal
The applicant pulled the St. Gertrude Community CFD rezoning before the hearing, so the board took no action. If they reapply, new notices and signs would go up and the case would come back to the board.
Affordable housing program oversight
Habitat reported 35 home repairs and 18 new homes last year, with ARPA infrastructure dollars enabling the Sager's Cove pocket neighborhood, and plans for 15 more Lake County homes this year.
Proposed pause on land use map amendments
Commissioner Sabatini wants a six-to-nine-month moratorium on major future land use changes until the new comprehensive plan is adopted, to stop piecemeal rezonings from complicating the plan. Discussion is set for November 17.
Solid Waste Rate Increase
Hauling and disposal contract costs are pushing solid waste assessments up about $37 a year; a public hearing follows September 8.
Road resurfacing and CR 466A widening
Committee member Tim Kyle flagged Orange Avenue as an increasingly used cut-through needing a resurfacing refresh, though staff noted that funding would come from Public Works, not the CRA.
Montverde Academy tourism sponsorship
The county will spend $150,000 a year for three years in tourist tax dollars to be a 'proud partner' of USA Track & Field, betting on national exposure ahead of the Olympics. Commissioner Sabatini wants the county to focus its tourism brand instead.
Landscaping and tree protection standards update
New developments (except single existing lots) must now provide a 25-foot Type C buffer from public roads; more landscape code updates are coming.
Protecting historical and archaeological sites
The Mount Plymouth Landowners League wants the historic 1940s parapet-roof grocery store building next to the Addis Marketplace project preserved, noting its broken plate-glass window is a safety hazard.
Old 441 roundabout construction hurts businesses
Businesses near the closed roundabout — a British pub and a gas station among them — report losing customers because drivers think they're unreachable. The county added wayfinding signs late and now will consider a signage policy and possibly a small, receipt-verified grant program.
Property Appraiser budget appeal
A year after rejecting the property appraiser's 27% budget increase, the board will consider appealing this year's budget by $1 million within the 15-day window, redirecting the money to roads if successful.
Military installation readiness review
Lake County touches two critical Navy installations — Bug Springs and the Pinecastle Range. Preliminary modeling shows spring impacts from groundwater pumping and land-use change, and a $700,000 state grant is coming to the county to pave the Bug Springs access road.
DOJ BIDEN grant application for Sheriff's Office
The county authorized a $12.65 million DOJ grant application for the Sheriff's Office, which funds drone and surveillance programs. A resident questioned whether the surveillance is needed and who pays after the three-year grant ends.
Fifth-year LEAD economic development funding
The county is paying LEAD $500,000 for a fifth year as its economic development partner, betting that business attraction will diversify a tax base that's 82% residential. Commissioner Smith wanted to cut the amount to $250,000 because LEAD hasn't hit its five-year job and wage targets.
Proposed planning and zoning fee increases
The Home Builders Association is pushing back on the FY2027 fee schedules, saying the county hasn't shown how the new fees — including a $2,500 expedited business review fee — were calculated, and warning that higher fees feed into housing costs.
Speed limit reduction request on CR 437
Committee member Francis Morris again pushed to lower speed limits where new sidewalks are planned, citing the comprehensive plan's traffic-calming language. Staff reported Public Works says it can't be done for now.
Fire, solid waste and MSBU assessments
Solid waste rates rose $37 to cover hauling contracts; fire assessments held flat with a new tiered residential structure; the septic-to-DWTS fee rose 3% to $700.19; and subdivision road MSBUs continue with Trailside newly joining.
FEMA hurricane reimbursement delays
The county has spent $18 million on hurricanes since 2022 but gotten only about $4 million back, with $11.8 million still pending. Commissioners floated lobbying Washington and stepping up the call cadence.
North Lake Trail extension to Lakeview Terrace
A $1.2 million trail extension past a 'trail to nowhere' ending in the woods will connect Lakeview Terrace's roughly 600 residents to downtown Umatilla, funded by shifting sales tax dollars from the East Lake Sports Complex.
Transit facility feasibility and partnerships
A new partner — the Nicholas family of companies — wants to design, build, operate and maintain an expo center at the fairgrounds site with a $10 million county cap. Commissioners split on whether it's rushed, but agreed to pursue the P3 with competitive bidding plus a parallel RFP for an open-air arena.
Election Results
Lake County’s Florida primary results are out, and the local winners are the people who’ll help steer county decisions. If you live there, these races matter because they can shape budgets, services, and priorities.
North Lake Hospital District continuation
By state law the hospital district's continuation must go to voters every ten years. The Board put it on the November 3 ballot, 4-1, with Commissioner Sabatini voting no and floating a legal challenge to test whether the vote is truly mandatory.
Crossing guard hours at Windy Hill Middle School
A Clermont parent asked the county to extend a crossing guard's hours at Hartwood Marsh and Hancock roads — the guard leaves at 3:45 p.m., but school runs until 4:00 p.m. and construction has made the intersection busier. Staff will follow up.
Setback variance requests (Alsept, Love, Gifford, Escobedo, Humphrey)
Five property owners had variance cases set for public hearing, where they asked the county to relax land development rules such as building setbacks. The only case with full details is the Alsept carport variance near Leesburg. Without minutes, it's unknown whether any were approved or denied.
Certified recovery residences ordinance
The county created new land development rules for certified recovery residences, defining where they're permitted or conditional.
Round Lake Road Extension right-of-way
The county is spending $2.749 million to buy right-of-way from Wolf Branch LLC for the Round Lake Road Extension — one piece of a future north-south connector to SR 44. Commissioner Morris pushed back on the cost versus eminent domain.
Flock surveillance cameras
Multiple residents urged the county to remove or reject Flock license plate cameras, citing surveillance abuse examples elsewhere. Staff clarified the sheriff's office runs the program, not the board, which has declined red-light and school-zone cameras.
Lake Nellie Crossing Wastewater System Transfer
The board picked option three — having the county take over operation and maintenance of the subdivision's distributed wastewater treatment system — to protect homeowners from future cost increases, with a fallback if the deal can't come together.
Montverde Joint Planning Agreement
County and Groveland staff are grinding through a road-by-road transfer agreement; the deadline slid another six months to the end of 2026.
Temporary library site design
The county switched architects from Powell to KTH for the temporary library remodel, with a quote and schedule expected within weeks. Members asked whether the exterior and a front park could be included, but funding priorities remain with the road project first.
Underground utilities along the CRA corridor
One committee member argued the county should tackle undergrounding power and sewer service before pouring sidewalks, saying commercial development and the corridor's vision depend on it. Staff noted Lake County isn't a utility provider but said the comment will be considered in design.
Monte Vista/SR 50 traffic congestion
Growth in Orange County's Kelly Park area and the 429 connection are funneling more traffic through the CR 46 corridor, adding urgency to infrastructure improvements.
Sorrento roundabout design
The roundabout is about 90% designed, with TIF dollars covering the in-CRA portion of design and engineering. Construction funding isn't secured yet — staff is hunting for grants.
East Crooked Lake Drive traffic controls
After years of complaints, stop signs, four speed tables, a residential-area sign and truck-weight limits are coming to East Crooked Lake Drive and Country Club Road in the Eustis area, addressing heavy cut-through truck traffic on a 25 mph residential road.
Distributed wastewater treatment program contract
The OnSyte amendment drew concerns about extra costs passed to homeowners and what happens if the contractor fails. Staff confirmed the county is responsible only for grant-covered units, rate increases are capped at 4% or CPI, and the county gets the source code if it must take over.
Water Authority stormwater master plan and NuRF in-sourcing
The reorganized Water Authority pitched four new positions — including stormwater engineers — to bring NuRF operations in-house and save over $330,000 a year, and to lead a countywide stormwater master plan the cities would adopt. The Board gave consensus to the positions.
2026 Hurricane Season Outlook
Forecasters expect a below-normal season: 8-14 named storms with 1-3 major hurricanes. Residents were urged to build supply kits, know their safe room, sign up at AlertLake.com, and save the Citizens Information Line number, 352-253-9999.
SR 44 traffic safety
A resident raised dangerous curves without warning signs between Pine Lakes and Cassia and asked about widening SR 44. The county can't put up signs on a state road but will route concerns to FDOT, which has done a safety study; Public Works director Mike Olka will meet with the resident.
Rural conservation subdivision standards overhaul
The county wants clearer rules for conservation subdivisions in rural and sensitive areas, including wetland-credit density bonuses and BCC review of sketch plans. Critics want density bonuses capped or removed in the Green Swamp and Wekiva areas.
Joint planning area boundaries with Eustis and Tavares
Following last week's joint planning meeting, commissioners discussed one-on-one talks with cities about drawing a rural protection line on the county map — specifically the Eustis JPA boundaries and a horse farm off Shirley Shores Road in Tavares that could be rezoned.
Possible Lake Express fare increase
Transit staff noted the county hasn't raised fixed-route fares since 2007 and that a 25-cent increase to $1.25 could bring in about $45,000 a year while still keeping Lake County among the lowest fares in the region. Staff offered to bring back a deeper analysis.
Beekeeping and community gardens on public lands
Commissioners proposed dedicating some soon-to-be-purchased county land to community gardens and opening public lands to beekeeping leases. Staff noted past liability concerns and said a passive-site approach could work.
Saturday transit service and expanded hours
Riders asked for weekend and later service. A $96,496 grant (matched with advertising revenue, no new general-fund dollars) will launch Saturday service October 1, 2026, and evening hours added last October drew over 4,000 riders by February.
South Lake Regional Park completion
Commissioners celebrated tonight's first-pitch opening of the park's next phase and discussed whether the Live Well Foundation could become a funding partner to finish the remaining two phases of the master plan.
Vision Zero / Safety Action Plan and federal safety grant
The county adopted a Vision Zero goal and Safety Action Plan and will apply for a federal Safe Streets for All implementation grant to fund road safety projects.
FY2025 audit and county finances
Clean audit across the board: net position up ~$100 million, revenues $17 million over projection, reserves above goal despite hurricane losses. Good news for the county's financial footing heading into budget season.
Vita Serena annexation opposition (Fruitland Park)
The Board will send a strongly worded letter opposing Fruitland Park's annexation of 95 rural acres for a 344-home subdivision, citing traffic on tiny Micro Racetrack Road and the CR 466A corridor.
Local Election Results
Lake County’s local election results are coming in, showing who will hold local offices and which ballot measures passed. If you live there, these outcomes shape decisions on services, growth, and possibly taxes or fees.
