Additional $2.4 million in ARPA grant funds for sewer lift station projects
Amendment 2 to the FDEP grant adds $2,396,220 in federal ARPA money for the Lift Station 3 expansion and Lift Station 13 demolition, bringing the total award to $5,334,095. It also extends deadlines and drops the city's matching-fund requirement.
Westside stormwater conveyance failure
The city is spending about $425,000 on an emergency fix of failed 48-inch drainage pipes feeding Palma Sola Bay — a critical system serving dozens of westside neighborhoods. Staff also flagged that the city's stormwater fee has long been too low to cover the true cost.
Stormwater system strain in older neighborhoods
Councilwoman Gonzalez Moore flagged that heavy rains are inundating lift stations in older parts of the city and asked staff to keep stormwater improvements a top priority.
Permanent Equalization Tank and Wastewater Capacity
The city is replacing its leased temporary tank with a permanent 3-million-gallon-per-day equalization tank near the wastewater plant, about half grant-funded. It manages high wet-season flows — key to the Waterkeepers litigation consent order compliance.
Ward 4 stormwater and drainage problems
Councilwoman Gonzalez Moore reported continued flooding and lift station problems in Ward 4 after heavy rains. Staff says CDBG-DR mitigation projects are being lined up, and a Public Works Open House on September 16 will detail projects.
Private Lateral Replacement Program
Cracked, aging sewer pipes on private property are letting stormwater flood the wastewater plant — up to 40 million gallons a day on the worst days, causing overflows into the river. This program replaces laterals at qualifying pre-1969 homes for free, with about 200 homes qualifying but only 14 responses so far in the CRA districts.
New utility payment system
A new utility billing portal launches September 1 with autopay, text-to-pay, Spanish-language support, and a quick-pay option. Existing autopay users will need to register once in the new system.
Downtown Water Main Phase 2
Two emergency repairs in late July cost about $124,000, part of a years-long wave of water system failures that's straining reserves and driving rate discussions. The city is pursuing over $160 million in funding and a long-term plan due within six months.
8th Avenue West water transmission main redundancy
Staff jumped on a chance to install a redundant 18-inch water main while the road was already open, saving roughly $110,000 and protecting water service to the whole city if the existing line fails.
Ironwood water main replacement assessments
Ironwood condominium owners will get formal assessment notices for the water main replacement the city took over, with a public hearing July 22.
CDBG-DR Disaster Recovery Funding
Bradenton is chasing its share of $252 million in HUD disaster money: $73 million in infrastructure projects (mostly stormwater) and a $6 million sewer-lateral program. Councilwoman Gonzalez Moore pushed hard on Crescent Court, a street that floods at high tide and scored too low for her taste.
