4 issues in public safety with high priority
Downtown event security barriers
A $1 million federal grant funds portable vehicle barriers that can stop a 16,500-pound vehicle, protecting crowds at downtown events like July 4th and New Year's Eve.
Public safety staffing pressure and Amendment 3 threat
Fire has hired 36 of 48 positions with seven paramedics in fire school, and police are seeking $2.6 million in federal funding for the new EOC/communications equipment plus $1 million for movable vehicle barricades downtown. Crime fell again in 2025, ranking St. Cloud 37th safest nationally for its size.
School-zone speed cameras still off
The cameras caught 7,207 speeders — including one doing 60 in a 15 mph zone — but have been off since November 2025 over a legal dispute about where cameras can sit. Police will keep doing in-person enforcement, which means higher fines and license points for violators. The council wants the cameras back but is waiting on the vendor.
St. Cloud Hotel code enforcement saga
The Special Magistrate cut a $74,000 fine to $5,000; the council held firm on the March 2027 certificate-of-occupancy deadline and asked staff to study replacing the magistrate with a citizen Code Enforcement Board.
