4 issues in water utilities with high priority
Sewer and Water Infrastructure Investments
The county's utilities need about $855 million over 20 years — over half just to replace aging pumps, pipes, and plants. The Greenwood Lakes wastewater plant fix got a big state loan boost: $19.2 million with half forgiven.
Utilities Department Office Building Purchase
The county is spending $3.7 million (utility fund money, not taxes) to buy an office for Utilities, whose current leased building has black mold. Commissioner Dallari raised questions about cost per square foot, but the board voted unanimously after discussion.
Michigan Avenue drainage mitigation funding
The county accepted $342,216 in federal hazard-mitigation grant money to fix drainage problems on Michigan Avenue in District 5. This should help with flooding issues in that neighborhood.
Midway drainage improvement and destination trail project
After years of waiting, construction on Midway's flood-control fixes starts in March, with three bid packages totaling about $10.5 million awarded at or under estimates. A 1-mile paved trail loop around the lake and a new fishing pier at Roseland Park are also moving forward, with a final budget amendment due this spring. Groundbreaking is set for March 25 at the Midway Community Center.
