5 issues in development with low priority
Outdated building-construction ordinance
The city's building-construction chapter of the code of ordinances still references the Standard Building Code, which Sarasota stopped using around 2003. A board member suggested the city attorney update it — commissioners have been asking boards for code improvement recommendations.
Payne Park Villas development agreement termination
The city and developer Quincy Real Estate Holdings formally ended their 2017 development agreement for Payne Park Villas after the second public hearing; Weekley Homes had already let its interest lapse.
Winton Avenue surplus parcel sale
The city sold a tiny unbuildable lot used as a driveway for years to the neighboring Marra family for $2,100, with proceeds going to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
Newtown CRA Advisory Board appointment
The seat held by Alex Chau expired in December 2025 due to term limits. From four applicants, the board chose Charles Walker, completing the five-member advisory board.
Housing alternatives: tiny and container homes
Commissioner Ahearn-Koch wants staff to research tiny, small, and container homes — plus manufactured housing — as more affordable options, possibly including container-home ADUs. Staff will bring a presentation.
