7 issues in roads with high priority
Kathleen Road widening
Engineering design for widening Kathleen Road is moving forward, largely federally funded. A commissioner asked whether the state could take over maintenance afterward.
County Road 557 widening
A $90 million contract will widen about 5.7 miles of CR 557 from West Alford Street to near I-4, adding capacity, sidewalks and safety improvements. Commissioner Wilson flagged the eye-popping cost: about $17 million per mile.
Thompson Nursery Road widening right-of-way
The county awarded the $33.5 million construction contract for the first 1.9-mile segment and $3.45 million more in Phase II design — the county's most complicated road project ever, per the county manager.
Central Polk Parkway East Land Impacts
A resident told the board the planned parkway could cost her family land, and questions remain about the project's naming and design. A PD&E public meeting is coming and comments are due September 8.
Moving I-4 Forward and US 27 Interchange Improvements
A $3.51 billion program will rebuild the I-4/US 27 interchange with a turbo lane, a fourth travel lane, and a continuous flow intersection at Posner/Home Run Boulevard, finishing around 2031. Local businesses and residents near US 27 are watching how access will change.
State Road 60 Coast to Coast Scenic Highway designation
A proposed rock-crushing and recycled concrete operation next to the Ramblewood subdivision was denied unanimously. Commissioners cited dust, noise, 75-foot storage piles and the area's accumulating 'junky industrial' character as things travelers see entering Polk County on Highway 60.
Deeson Road traffic and pedestrian safety
Residents told commissioners Deeson Road is narrow, has no sidewalks or bike lanes, and has seen pedestrians struck, with accidents frequent at the Kathleen intersection. The developer promised sidewalks and a turn lane, but skeptics questioned whether they're feasible.
