11 issues in public safety
Code enforcement retaliation complaint
A condo owner told council that code enforcement is threatening a lien on her unit to force her to accept an unpermitted contractor she says created a hostile situation. She asked the city to halt enforcement until her public records request is fulfilled; the mayor said her request would be answered.
New Public Safety Complex moves forward
The council approved a $1 million pre-construction agreement with H.J. High for the new public safety complex — a single-story, 8,000-square-foot station with crew quarters and three apparatus bays, two for EMT operations, on a two-acre site in the Ever Be development.
OPD Investigation Review Request
Two speakers said OPD officers stopped a youth center staff member in front of children — the tenth such incident in 2.5 years — and demanded action, not just phone calls from the chief. An OPD commander said officers were following up on an armed robbery and there was no use of force. Calls included reinstating a citizen review board.
Red-Light Camera Program Extension
The annual report shows 60,093 violations issued and $3.578 million collected by the city — but most of the money goes to the state. Sheehan and Ortiz pushed for more of it to fund local safety programs; Orlando has dropped from first to 18th in pedestrian danger rankings.
Coalition for the Homeless Center for Women and Families
The city is putting $10 million in Accelerate Orlando funds into the Coalition's new Center for Women and Families, adding transitional housing and a wellness center for homeless women and families.
287(g) Immigration Agreement Concerns
A resident, reading a letter from Tanya Jones, warned that the 287(g) agreement makes some families afraid to call police, citing recent ICE detention cases — including a 19-year-old who died in ICE custody.
School-route pedestrian and cyclist safety
Several commissioners zeroed in on e-motos — illegal electric motorcycles that kids ride because they look like the cool e-bikes. Because they lack pedals, they're easier for officers to identify, and Commissioners Sheehan and Burns both urged focusing enforcement there rather than penalizing kids riding legal e-bikes to school.
Fire Station 5 Relocation
The council approved pre-construction agreements for a state-of-the-art fire training center near the Mercy Operations Center and a replacement Fire Station 13 serving Boggy Creek and the trade port area — investments meant to speed up emergency response.
New interim fire chief
Shannon Teamer was introduced as Orlando's new interim fire chief — the first woman to hold the job — as Chief Jason Revoldt retired. She's a Richmond Heights product (District 6) living in District 1.
Possible ICE Detention Center in Orlando
Roughly 20 speakers urged the council to demand transparency on a rumored DHS detention facility, hold public hearings, and reduce OPD's participation in the federal 287(g) immigration program. The mayor said the city has had no contact about any facility and can't control the county jail, but pledged maximum public input if one is ever proposed.
New Orlando Fire Training Center
The city is moving forward with a first-of-its-kind consolidated fire training campus — burn tower, trench rescue, vehicle extrication and more — near the Expressway Authority and Emergency Operations Center.
