Conservation land acquisition in Hobe Sound
Philanthropist Louise Yeiser donated $8.5 million worth of land to the county, including parcels that were about to become multifamily developments, plus a 2,000-acre ranch got a permanent $17 million conservation easement next to the C-44 reservoir.
Newfield environmental parcel donation and conservation easement
The first of two hearings on amending the Newfield development agreement would let a conservation parcel host dredge spoils for Indian River Lagoon South muck removal — a project Chair Heard has championed for decades. One speaker questioned salt contamination risks.
St. Lucie Inlet dredge material relocation
Residents and fishing advocates say recent dredging near the St. Lucie Inlet smothered reefs with silt, killed fish, and violated the spirit of permits; the Army Corps and county staff countered that turbidity testing showed zero exceedances and the sand is beach-compatible. The dispute has gone viral locally and the county plans a rapid-response 'crisis management' information effort.
