Loss of the only public golf course west of the bridge
Commissioners previewed a large development proposal (the golf course property) expected within a couple of months. Residents are worried about traffic on quiet connecting roads; a similar 2015 request was approved by the Planning Commission but fizzled before reaching the Commission.
Rules of Conduct in City Parks (Ordinance 1192R)
New park rules close parks from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m. and set volume limits for audio devices. One resident worried overnight closures could discourage people who exercise and informally watch over parks at night.
Concerts in the park series
A privately organized concert series is running at no cost to the city, though the first show's attendance was hurt by rain and Thursday scheduling. The remaining shows feature Nora Bass and Kyle Mitchell.
New pavilion at Kinsaul Park
Mr. Finch is donating a pavilion to replace the demolished splash pad at Kinsaul Park; demolition starts within weeks and the official donation comes to the commission next meeting.
Proposed bourbon tasting fundraiser at Kinsaul Park
A board member pitched a ticketed bourbon and cigar tasting event at Kinsaul Park's new pavilion and gazebo as an adults-only fundraiser; the mayor reportedly liked the idea.
Winter Wonderland planning
Winter Wonderland moves to the sports complex on November 21 to fix last year's parking and traffic headaches, with about 260 vendors expected — more than the walkways can hold, so fields may be used. The board may help with setup and layout.
2027 July 4th event sponsorships
The fiscal 2027 budget zeroes out event funding — nothing happens next year unless a sponsor is found within 90 days of each event. The board is helping shape a Dunedin-style sponsorship deck with bundled RFPs to keep concerts, movies in the park and other traditions going.
Animal shelter funding concerns
The budget keeps animal shelter funding, but commissioners remain divided on whether the county should share costs — staff says the commission must approach county elected officials directly. Residents suggested community committees to support the shelter.
Tree giveaways and community events funding
With events cut from the city budget, a volunteer-run Community Fund has fully sponsored the first two fall concerts and plans vendors, winter events, park projects and tree plantings — all without tax dollars. Commissioners urged residents to donate.
Rails-to-Trails crossing signals
The three planned rail crossing lights got trimmed to just one at $25,000. Commissioner Warrick questioned whether they're even needed; others want to pilot one before committing to all three.
James Rogers Park future
Seven bids came in, but with FEMA disaster funds gone the park rebuild would come out of general fund reserves — so staff recommended awarding nothing. The commission will reject all bids and do a bare-bones in-house safety cleanup instead, breaking (at least for now) a promise to give the neighborhood real playground improvements.
Fourth of July event debrief
Staff reviewed what went wrong this year — parade gaps, traffic confusion, and park crews stretched too thin — and the board suggested a $25 parade entry fee and trained volunteer marshals. The 112-year parade tradition is a priority to keep.
Lynn Haven Community Fund launch
A new 501(c)(3) — the Lynn Haven Community Fund — holds its first meeting August 15 at Crave, aiming to cover programs, events, parks, sports, animals and nature gaps left by budget cuts.
New fees for boat launch and splash pad?
Residents want to charge non-residents at the boat launch and add small splash pad fees, but DEP grant restrictions block fees at Porter Park. Staff are hunting for the original Wayside Park deed agreement to see if there's a way around it.
Children's Memorial Garden vandalism
The memorial garden beside Kinsaul Park — maintained by a parents' nonprofit — has been trashed: gate ripped off, lights busted, fountain stagnant. Commissioner Tinder is organizing a volunteer cleanup day and the police chief will lock two of the three entrances and keep cameras on.
