$50 Million Conservation Bond Issuance
The Board approved appraisals for four properties, including the 562-acre Sunderman Family Trust tract in Groveland. Commissioner Sabatini argued the county should prioritize land at cities' edges to stop sprawl rather than rural land already protected from dense development; Chairwoman Campione countered that public ownership doesn't stop cities from leapfrogging to annex.
Library Impact Fee Trust Fund grants
Library impact fees collected on new homes fund library projects across the county. This year the board awarded grants for eBooks, a Library of Things collection, shelving, a Paisley makerspace, the Eustis Memorial Library expansion, and the W.T. Bland Public Library expansion.
North Lake Trail extension to Lakeview Terrace
A $1.2 million trail extension past a 'trail to nowhere' ending in the woods will connect Lakeview Terrace's roughly 600 residents to downtown Umatilla, funded by shifting sales tax dollars from the East Lake Sports Complex.
Wekiva Trail rail corridor acquisition
The county is buying the 11-mile CSX rail corridor between Sorrento, Mount Dora, and Tavares for a paved trail — the missing link residents have pushed for over 20 years. It connects to the Coast to Coast Trail, and supporters cite big safety and economic benefits; opponents worry about cost, maintenance, and losing any chance of passenger rail.
Temporary library site design
The county switched architects from Powell to KTH for the temporary library remodel, with a quote and schedule expected within weeks. Members asked whether the exterior and a front park could be included, but funding priorities remain with the road project first.
South Lake Regional Park completion
Commissioners celebrated tonight's first-pitch opening of the park's next phase and discussed whether the Live Well Foundation could become a funding partner to finish the remaining two phases of the master plan.
McTuris House upkeep
A commissioner asked that the McTuris House — home of Medal of Honor recipient Robert McTuris — be spruced up before Memorial Day. Staff agreed to assess maintenance needs.
Beekeeping and community gardens on public lands
Commissioners proposed dedicating some soon-to-be-purchased county land to community gardens and opening public lands to beekeeping leases. Staff noted past liability concerns and said a passive-site approach could work.
Tobacco-free parks
June was declared Tobacco-Free Parks Month — symbolic, but Commissioner Sabatini voted no over his cigar habit and pride in the state's largest tobacco farm.
