AFSCME Local 161 pension restoration
The city finalized its second big labor deal this year, restoring retirement benefits general employees lost in 2017. The mayor says it should help keep experienced workers, and a fire union deal is also tentatively done.
Residential daycare at 902 East 33rd Street
A homeowner wants to convert her house into a 20-child daycare, needing a land use change, rezone and setback variance. It cleared first reading 5-1, but Vice President De La Vega warned about parking, traffic and future expansion in an all-residential block. Final votes come November 10.
Firefighters Local 1102 contract
The council ratified a new two-year contract with Hialeah firefighters through September 2028. Union president Eric Johnson called it fast, transparent, and a step toward making Hialeah a destination department rather than a training ground.
Childcare facility lockdown notification system
A childcare provider asked how to set up a communication system so childcare facilities get notified when a lockdown is needed.
Sidewalk obstruction enforcement
Cars parked on the grassy/pervious area along West 19th Avenue are blocking the sidewalk, forcing daycare kids into harm's way.

The council sustained denial of a cafeteria operator's return to an industrial parcel with 89 police incidents since 2021. The owner says he's also facing code enforcement fines and must address violations before any future application.
Boat parking ban on duplex and R-2 properties
A 30-year boat owner asked the council to reconsider the ban on boat parking at duplex and zero-lot-line homes. Council members agreed to study it, but the city attorney noted the prohibition dates to a 2007 ordinance, not 2024, and the boat owner can apply for a variance.
