Solid Waste Policy Overhaul
The city applied for a grant to buy a glass crusher that could turn recycled glass into sand for concrete and road projects — keeping glass out of expensive disposal and possibly becoming a revenue source.
Dissolution of the Department of Resiliency
A resident warned the community perceives the city stepping back from resiliency after the resiliency department was dissolved and Dr. Zhu moved back to Planning. City leaders countered that the work continues inside operational departments, though Commissioner Eastman questioned whether a standalone office better coordinates across departments.
Cabot/Koppers Superfund Site Cleanup
The EPA is starting a major construction phase at the former Koppers site: a 5,300-foot underground wall to trap contaminated groundwater, plus tree clearing that neighbors will notice starting mid-October. An open house is set for October 21 at the site.
Construction and Demolition ordinance revisions
Some C&D haulers dodge the city's higher tipping fees by dumping at a regular landfill instead of the designated transfer station — and they have to be caught six times before anything happens. Staff proposes a flat fee structure to fix enforcement.
