Spin Scooter Program Expansion Proposal
Staff announced Spin's new contract goes before city council on November 16: doubling scooters from 100 to 200, extending hours to 1 a.m., and replacing the flat $35,000 annual fee with a per-ride schedule that could bring the city $40,000+ if rides hit 30,000.
Former News-Press Site Redevelopment Rebate
The former News Press site is slated to become a mid-rise mixed-use district with housing, a hotel, office, retail and restaurants — the biggest thing happening in Midtown. Construction is targeted for late 2027/2028, and the CRA approved a TIFF incentive to help fund it. It could reshape how people experience downtown Fort Myers for decades.
Innovation Walk Master Planning
A proposed riverside walking loop connecting Centennial Park to the Edison & Ford estates — with a looped boardwalk, pocket parks, shade trees, a chicane on West First Street, and kayak access. It's a CRA project with 59 recommendations in seven phases, but board members pressed on who will pay for upkeep and how it generates revenue for the city.
Repurposing of the Lee Memorial property
As Lee Health moves to its new campus (opening late 2028), the old Lee Memorial site could become a whole new neighborhood — housing, a big linear park along Cleveland Avenue, maybe a hotel, grocery or performing arts center. The big catch: the site wouldn't come online until around 2031, so this is a long game.
MLK Residential Property Improvement Grant
The CRA's 50/50 matching grant helps homeowners in redevelopment areas pay for exterior upgrades. Sharetha Davis's $11,756 grant for walkway, landscaping, fencing and lighting improvements was recommended for approval.
Pervious Surface Amendment & Junkyard Property Status
The draft amendment allowing more environmentally friendly pervious driveways is still being reworked by staff to balance road wear concerns with environmental goals, and will go straight to the Planning Board when ready.
Florida Green Building Certification Exploration
The city is weighing participation in the Florida Green Building Coalition's certification program, potentially using incentives or code changes to push new development toward greener building. The upcoming land development code update is the natural vehicle.
STARS Youth Program Funding
Speaker Dakari Harleston asked council to restore $200,000 cut from the STARS program budget, citing fall festival and Juneteenth events in Ward 3.
Capital Improvement Revenue Notes Limit Increase
A proposed resolution increases the maximum aggregate principal amount of the city's Capital Improvement Revenue Notes from $50 million to $60 million and extends the maturity date to September 2029.
Lockwood Drive Future Land Use and PUD Rezoning
Three quasi-judicial items moved toward a November 16 public hearing: a density increase on 8.12 acres at 1455 Lockwood Drive, the Billy Creek Apartments PUD, and a rezone to Commercial Intensive on 8.88 acres at 1751 Ortiz Avenue.
287(g) Immigration Enforcement Agreement Opposition
Multiple speakers described ICE operations along Palm Beach Boulevard, alleging racial profiling, unsafe driving, and children being taken — and criticized the council's 2025 approval of the 287(g) agreement with Fort Myers police. No council action was taken.
Edison and Ford Winter Estates Welcome Center Project and Funding
The first new building at the Estates since the 1960s — a $5.9 million Welcome Center with the city contributing about $1.9 million and guaranteeing the Estates' $1.6 million construction loan. Groundbreaking is expected in early December, with roughly a year of construction.
Waterway Debris Collection and Emergency Watershed Protection
The city is awarding contracts and engineering oversight services totaling over $3.5 million for debris collection and management under the NRCS Emergency Watershed Protection Program.
