6 issues in environment with high priority
Breakers Avenue resiliency project timing
Glassman handed the city manager a flood plan calling for road-raising pilots, temporary barriers and better resident education, and wants a framework back within 90 days. Residents on Mola Avenue and in Riviera Isles say they'll pay for road raising themselves.
North Fork of the New River environmental issues
The city is source-tracing bacteria at five chronically failing sites including Sweeting Park, where readings have hit 94% failure rates. Commissioners agreed testing isn't enough and pushed for a cleanup strategy with Broward County, SFWMD and other partners, plus an academic partner.
King tide flooding and Las Olas drainage
A resident warned that king tide flooding is worsening near Las Olas and asked for drainage maps, tidal valve inventory and hydraulic modeling before the Las Olas Mobility Improvements Project makes things worse for private property. Commissioners sympathetic but noted king tides have limits; staff agreed to meet with him.
Floodplain management and Community Rating System rating
The city is working to raise its FEMA Community Rating System score, which would lift flood-insurance discounts from 15% to 25% for the city's roughly 23,600 policyholders. Four plans must be adopted and FEMA inspects October 8.
Riverwalk North Seawall Replacement Grant
Two FIND grant applications advanced for seawall work, but Glassman warned water taxi and cruise vessel traffic at Sebastian and Seville could destroy living seawall features there.
Waterway bacteria testing and cleanup of Sweeting Park area
The city is source-tracing bacteria at five chronically failing sites including Sweeting Park, where readings have hit 94% failure rates. Commissioners agreed testing isn't enough and pushed for a cleanup strategy with Broward County, SFWMD and other partners, plus an academic partner.
