Senior meal and food insecurity funding
Sparked by Commissioner Geller's amendment removing fresh-food criteria from land use rules, commissioners discussed pushing developers to bring full grocery stores — not just convenience stores — to underserved neighborhoods.
Transportation surtax oversight changes
Proposed ordinance and resolution would change who sits on the surtax oversight board, how members are appointed, quorum and attendance rules, and municipal project funding and audit procedures for the half-penny transportation tax.
State-mandated changes to county advisory boards (SB 1134)
A new state law forces Broward to rewrite or repeal provisions governing advisory boards, touching the Commission on the Status of Women, Climate Change Task Force and others. Furr and Rich voted no on setting the hearings, calling it state overreach that Broward shouldn't 'backpedal' for.
Senior and veteran services funding
The county more than tripled behavioral health coalition funding to $4.5 million to add transitional recovery housing for people with opioid and mental health conditions, and boosted senior home care by about $86,000.
Fiscal Year 2027 countywide budget and millage
Commissioner Geller laid out three straight years of BSO funding increases outpacing every other county agency and called it unsustainable. The fight over access is really a fight over how much of the county budget the sheriff takes and how it's spent.
Alpha 250 Property sale fails
The county must start selling the 22-acre vacant parcel under a settlement agreement, but Coconut Creek asked for a delay to explore affordable housing and solid-waste uses, and Pompano Beach expressed interest in buying it. The motion to start the process failed 2-0.
Deferred $5.85 million BSO dispatch budget transfer
The Sheriff's consolidated dispatch contract ran over budget in FY 2026, and a $5.85 million reserve transfer to cover it was pushed off indefinitely — expect this back.
County Ombudsman proposal

Living wage stripped from procurement code
State law forced the county to scrap its living wage, domestic partnership and employee retention protections, dropping the wage floor from $18.53 to Florida's $14 minimum.
Property tax constitutional amendment threat
Commissioner Geller warned that a proposed property-tax constitutional amendment would cut roughly $634 million from the county's ~$600 million in available general revenue — meaning deep cuts to parks, libraries and everything else. County attorneys also briefed the board on new state limits on using public funds to communicate about the referendum.
Health care sales surtax referendum reset for November ballot

The board took up authorizing a lawsuit against the Broward Tax Collector over excess fees in its 2024-2025 annual report.
CPA services contract debate
A five-firm accounting services vendor list split commissioners 6-2 before being deferred to the next meeting after a successful reconsideration.

The county ratified a $29.8 million deal with Election Systems & Software for new voting machines, funded by a $13 million transfer from reserves.
County Auditor selection charter amendment
Voters will decide this November whether the commission can pick the County Auditor from among three candidates.
2027 meeting schedule conflicts with Passover
Mayor Gomez pointed out the proposed April 22, 2027 meeting falls on the first day of Passover, when observant Jewish members cannot work. Staff will combine the March and April meetings and propose an earlier April date.
Spirit Airlines headquarters as new governmental center?
Commissioners are staring down a three-quarter-billion-dollar new government center plan. Bogen and Udine argued the Spirit building could save $200-$350 million; Rich, McKinzie and others said the county should pump the brakes on all big spending with an ad valorem tax question looming.
Project Dashboard transparency tool
The county launched a live dashboard tracking 164 major projects — courthouse garage, government center, road work — with green/yellow/red status, updated at least every two weeks, with public access planned.
Low-income energy assistance
A two-year agreement with FPL delivers LIHEAP energy assistance to eligible low-income households at zero cost to the county.

After an employee with a disclosed conflict sat on a bid committee and an administrative error let it slide, Mayor Bogen won unanimous support for a rule making conflicts an automatic disqualifier — with discipline up to firing for employees who hide them.
County Attorney resignation and succession
The commission chose insider Annika E. Ashton to lead the County Attorney's Office when Drew Meyers departs in September, avoiding an outside search. Commissioners praised her government law, litigation and community roots in central Broward.
Animal Care and Building Code fee increases
Advocates from Broward County Residents for Protecting Animals and Welfare described underfunded spay/neuter programs, weak enforcement of new state animal laws, and a dog that died after ignored complaints. They asked a commissioner to sponsor the issue for a future agenda.
Ticket distribution policy deferred to April
A policy governing how commissioners hand out tickets from sponsorships and donations got tangled in a deferral fight and slipped to the first April meeting.
Purchasing card program rules tightened
Commissioners will get optional county purchasing cards with auditor oversight, passing 6-3. Critics called it an ATM card for taxpayer money; supporters said it shouldn't cost a less-wealthy commissioner to serve.
Expired CRA tax increment financing for housing
The Board expressed intent to steer expired community redevelopment agency tax increment financing revenue toward affordable housing and economic development, with homeless needs added by amendment; it's a statement of intent, not a spending decision.
Broward Days legislative strategy
Mayor Bogen and several commissioners said the annual Tallahassee trip should be rebuilt around pre-scheduled legislator meetings rather than a speaker series. Staff will work with lobbyists to set appointments ahead of time next year.
