7 issues in public safety with medium priority
Towing and immobilization reforms
The towing industry asked for a higher annual rate ceiling, a diesel fuel surcharge and a surcharge for storing damaged EVs. Commissioner Davis attacked the numbers as arbitrary and anti-consumer, staff said the $15/$25 surcharge far exceeds the ~$6 actual fuel cost, and the board deferred the fee resolution indefinitely while enacting the background-check ordinance.
Detention facility maintenance transition
The Sheriff handed jail maintenance back to the county, prompting a six-month authorization for the county to keep the five detention facilities running while it re-procures contracts.
AI surveillance cameras policy
A resident flagged the Sheriff's purchase of AI-capable cameras, sparking a debate over who controls camera placement on county rights-of-way. Commissioners promised a policy discussion and a staff memo rather than blocking the purchase.
Ambulance Service Certificates (COPCN) Overhaul Delayed
Hearing notices for three ambulance companies' certificates were pulled because the rewritten ambulance regulations (Chapter 3½) were withdrawn for further review. One item was later revived with a hearing moved to August or September.
Senior eviction prevention legal aid
The county is spending $100,000 so Coast to Coast Legal Aid can help seniors 60+ facing eviction. Mayor Bogen pulled the item to explain the direct funding, and Commissioner Rogers later said $100,000 serving at most about 40 people isn't enough.
Paid holidays for contracted security guards
Guards at County buildings that close on holidays lose a day's pay — up to $2,500 a year — while others in the same buildings still work. The County will now reimburse vendors for holiday pay on July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas, but a new state law blocks similar requirements after October 1.
School Zone Speed Cameras in Coconut Creek
Speed detection systems will operate in school zones near Coconut Creek High, Monarch High and Dave Thomas Education Center at no cost to the county.
